National Geographic - Iceland

The National Geographic have used one of my images to illustrate an article on their website about the Laugavegurinn hiking trail (also known as the Laugavegur trail) in Iceland.

If you are thinking about Iceland as a walking destination or perhaps are even thinking about doing the actual Laugavegurinn hiking trail you can read a little about my own experiences on the trail here.

Iceland - Landmannalaugar to Skogar

It's a wonderful country with some fantastic natural sights, lovely people, excellent trekking and some great light for photography. If you love the outdoors and haven't been it is worth some serious consideration. I know I am going back ASAP.

Apologies for pixelating some parts of the website out, but I don't want to create any copyright issues relating to the writers and advertisers

  1. I've always thought that having a photo in National Geographic sort of means you've made it - the quality of pictures there always seems so high. Is this a commonplace for you, or still a new enough experience to be exciting?

    1. I am not sure if I have had any images in the NG before. I only found out about this one by accident. The problem in dealing with photo libraries is they let you know which images they license and the type of use, but don't inform you of the individual client anymore. They stopped this a few years ago because some photographers were trying to undercut the library and/or pestering clients for tear sheets. Even after all this time I still get exited about seeing my work published - it sort of helps to confirm I am still on the right track. I suppose I do get a bit blasé at times, but a tear sheet from the NG is a good one to have.

  2. Congratulations. That's a real achievement.
I've just had a look at your Iceland report. You've got some wonderful images there. My wife and I toured around Iceland in 1981 and we did some walking, including ascending one of the glaciers – but nothing on that scale. It's such a beautiful and varied country.
We did, though, enjoy a very hot and sunny day at Skogafoss – in fact it was so hot we had a good bath in the river beneath the waterfall. Happy days.
    Cheers, Alen

    1. I bet it was quite an adventurous undertaking in 1981 especially considering there would have been a lot less information available regarding travelling. For us Skogafoss was the complete opposite to your experience and it poured with rain. We still had a great time though. The only outdoor bathing we managed was in the hot springs at Landmannalaugar. Unfortunately not only was there a biting wind when we got out, but we later read a sign which said there was sometimes a parasite in the pool that could enter the skin and cause swimmers itch. Over the coming weeks every time one of us started scratching it set the others off. Fortunately we never developed any symptoms.

I agree it is a beautiful and varied country and I cannot wait to go back. In fact I have plans afoot for next year.
